When did you join Bespoke HR and what prompted you to work for us?

I joined in April which currently makes me the newest member of the team. I wanted to work for an employer that could offer me a better work/life balance after having a baby, without sacrificing the skills and experience I had gained throughout my ten years in HR.  I feel very lucky to be working here, surrounded by like minded, pragmatic HR professionals.

Tell us about your HR career background

I have worked in a variety of sectors over the years, including educational establishments, not-for-profit organisations, global technology companies and even small family run businesses – I love variety!  I have been lucky enough to have gained some invaluable experiences and specialist skills thanks to my varied career.

What advice would you give to business owners who don’t have any HR support or budget about how they can look after their staff and their business?

If you really cannot budget for HR support, ensure you yourself are covering the basics to avoid any ambiguity and lower your risk in the future. Get contracts of employment in place, create job descriptions and if possible an employee handbook. I would always recommend trying to budget for HR support, even if it’s just on an ad-hoc basis or for a couple of hours a month.

What are some of the HR challenges you’re seeing at the moment?

The job market has changed exponentially since the pandemic, with talented candidates expecting more flexibility not only in hours but being able to work from home too. Some employers have been able to accommodate these changes with ease but it’s not an option for others which can be challenging. Additionally with those who are able to accommodate home working/flexible hours, we’re having to focus on exactly how this works, ensuring employees and managers are supported and that performance does not suffer as a result.

If you had to give one single piece of HR advice, what would it be?

Don’t underestimate the importance of having engaged, motivated employees. This can be easily achieved through open and honest communication, and having effective, consistent and inspiring managers in place.
